Little Shop of Horrors

Galveston’s Strand Theatre brings back the tale of Seymour and Audrey II

There’s theater and then there’s theater lite, and this summer, the Strand Theatre in Galveston is happy to supply the latter. Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s popular confection Little Shop of Horrors is full of ‘60s-style doo-wop tunes that keep everyone humming along. The dark comedy focuses on a skid-row floral shop and a guy named Seymour who finds a mysterious plant. He names his find Audrey II, after the girl of his dreams, and goes on to become an overnight success when everyone falls in love with the new green sensation.

Trouble is, Audrey II is carnivorous, as Seymour discovers when he pricks his hand on one of her thorns. She’s also quite bossy, and before long is bullying Seymour into bringing her more and more blood. Seymour tries to resist, but falls for trick after trick from the conniving carnivore. Before the tale is through, more than a few folks are eaten up by the blood-craving plant. 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Through July 20. 2317 Mechanic in Galveston.
