“Creature Comforts”

Artists channel their inner children at ArtStorm’s latest show

“The show is really young adults trying to hold onto their childhood imagination,” says curator/artist Eli Sebastian Brumbaugh about “Creature Comforts.” The exhibit features five locals, including Brumbaugh, along with Toronto artist Deforgeo. “Everyone has some sort of monster or creature they like to work with,” says Brumbaugh.

Brumbaugh is showing a couple of works; one has snakes with bloody fangs twisting up towards the top of the canvas, and another features a sinister-looking bird sitting below gray clouds. Deforgeo’s cartoonish pieces depict creatures with heads made of the body parts of other creatures, and monsters whose faces appear to be dripping off the canvas. Shane Hillman presents a baby-faced creature with a mustache who has a monster with six arms sprouting from its head. Lisa Marie Godfrey’s watercolor landscapes show the aftermath of a monster’s visit with barren scenes full of smoke, dead trees and tree trunks. The show also features the work of Rene Cruz and Jacob Calle and opens today with musical performances by local bands Young Mammals, News on the March and Wicked Poseur, along with L.A.’s Hard Place. 7 to 10 p.m. Regular viewing hours are noon to 7 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
