The opening scene of West Side Story tells you everything you need to know about the musical: Tough guys, full of pent-up anger and a simmering sexuality, suddenly break out in ballet moves and song, stopping just long enough to push each other around. Their slicked-back hair never moves out of place, even when they are twirling into a fight scene. This is gang life, boys and girls, from the minds of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. An updated Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story moves the action to the New York City slums, with the Montagues and Capulets replaced by Jets and Sharks, but the tragic ending remains the same.
