Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows

Man’s (and woman’s) best friend gets a workout

Anyone who’s seen the mockumentary Best in Show knows there’s a breed of humans who take their four-legged friends seriously. Very, very seriously. But the Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows promises much more than just overweight handlers jogging their precious pooches around a circle. Along with breed judging and obedience contests, dogs will compete in obstacle course, flyball and Frisbee-catching events. Vendors will sell all manner of doggie items (stock up on those dead possum-flavored bones!), and clinics on dog health, grooming and training will keep that canine happy.

And if the only current occupant of your doghouse is a shamed husband, you can get advice on choosing the right pet for yourself at the “Meet the Breed” seminars. Just be sure to stay away from any mutt named “Cujo.” 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Reliant Center, 8400 Kirby. For information, call 713-824-4968 or visit www.reliantdogshows.com. $5 to $10
Thu., July 17, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; Fri., July 18, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat., July 19, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun., July 20, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., 2008
