What Mainstream Publishers Don't Want You to Know: Digging Holes

Work hard, party harder

Blair Dimmick was born with a hole in her heart.

It was not only a birth defect, but a metaphor. Dimmick grew up in a stable family in Redding, California. Her mother is a licensed therapist, but even she could not fix whatever was bothering her daughter. Dimmick ran away a few times as a teenager, and developed a prodigious drinking habit, dabbling also with marijuana and pills. It was especially unhealthy for Dimmick, who had to undergo a series of open-heart surgeries.

By 2006, the 22-year-old Dimmick was living on her own and extremely restless. She had completed cosmetology school and was waiting to take the state boards, seven months out.

Chris Love runs Love Technologies, which Blair Dimmick was working for when she died in Marshall, Texas, in 2007. Love, who claims to make $250,000 a year, did not return calls. His wife Nicole told the Press he was too "broken up" to talk about Dimmick.

In September 2006, Dimmick became an agent with Love Technologies, under the umbrella of the Colorado-based Great Lakes Circulation. Dimmick apparently had fun on the crew. She had access to Ecstasy, alcohol, Xanax. In Florida, between Christmas and New Year's Eve, her crew got to party on a yacht.

In January, Love Technologies hit East Texas. Dimmick had to go to a hospital in Jacksonville, for reasons that are unknown. But apparently no one thought it was serious enough; in February, Dimmick and her crew were knocking on doors in Marshall, Texas.

Dimmick was found dead on her hotel room bed on February 17, 2007. The cause of death was listed as natural, stemming from her heart problems. While she had drugs in her system, none were present "in a toxic or lethal level," according to her autopsy report. However, the report also states, "the drugs probably have a contributing factor to her death."

Dimmick's mother says she never received all of her daughter's belongings, such as her digital camera, and Dimmick's wallet was returned empty. She says that when she spoke with Chris Love, he told her the camera was stolen. She also says Love asked if she was going to sue him. (Love may have been worried in part because he was driving these agents around unlawfully; he was arrested in Arizona in November 2007 for driving with a suspended or revoked license).

Although a police report and mailing labels Dimmick's mother received showed that Dimmick worked under Great Lakes Circulation, when the Press called to confirm Dimmick's employment, a company representative, who would only identify herself as "India," said she had no record of anyone by that name. When asked if the company does criminal background checks, India said yes. When asked why, then, they wouldn't have a record of a criminal check on Dimmick, India said that the company runs checks only on the names that are sent to the Colorado office, so not everyone is checked. She then said she would respond to written questions. She never did.

Chris Love didn't return a voice mail, and he just disconnected his cell a few days later. The Press heard instead from his wife, Nicole, who said Chris was still too "broken up " to talk about Dimmick's death.

On September 23, 2006, Dimmick sent a MySpace message to a cousin she had recently reconnected with. She was drunk while writing it, and it seemed to make her reflective. She asked her cousin if she knew the song "Badfish," by Sublime. (When you grab ahold of me / tell me that I'll never be set free / I'm a parasite / creep and crawl, I step into the night).

"Thats my wedding/ funeral song," Dimmick wrote. "..its me to the T ahahha I love it."

The next day, her cousin wrote back: "Dude stay safe though, dont die or anything i just started talkin to you again, i would be pist as hell if you bit it."
