“Joannaversary: Parachutists Are the Loneliest People”

An exhibit revisits a past exhibit and adds more artists to the mix

“Joannaversary: Parachutists Are the Loneliest People” is like a re-release with bonus features. The exhibit revisits the first show by Joanna curators Brian Rod and Cody Ledvina, with new artists thrown into the mix. Rod and Ledvina contribute the series of photographs of him walking past the Enron trial paparazzi with a parachute attached to his back. Monica Vidal’s gouache drawing Hive looks like a parachute that’s fallen to the ground and taken the shape of a vagina. Raymond Uhlir offers more gouache works including Falling, they circle with me always watching, in which a man about to be sucked into a jet engine is bordered by birds and psychedelic patterns. Erin Ikeler takes a more abstract approach with photos of dueling skylines at sunset. And Mark Flood took a discarded banner from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston that reads “Creative Zone sponsored by MFAH” and hung signs underneath that say “Another Painting.” The show opens today from 6 to 10 p.m. Regular viewing hours are noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 2, then by appointment only. Through August 15. The Joanna, 4014 Graustark. For information, call 713-825-1976 or visit www.thejoannawebsite.com. Free.
