Alfred Hitchcock set his 1938 film The Lady Vanishes in a train snaking across Europe. Of course, it’s Hitchcock, so his lovely young socialite star, Iris (an understandably flustered Margaret Lockwood), quickly becomes ensnared in a mystery: She befriends a middle-aged English governess who disappears while Iris is briefly unconscious, and no one else can seem to remember that she existed at all. Fortunately, a dapper young man named Gilbert (a very charming Michael Redgrave) is willing to help her search for the missing woman. Along the way, they meet cowards, spies, wanton women, double-dealing doctors, German soldiers, magicians and a nun in high heels.
