Margaret Cezair-Thompson knows what it means to be “in like Flynn.” The Jamaican-born author based her novel The Pirate’s Daughter on the promiscuous actor Errol Flynn’s time in her homeland. From the 1930s to the ‘50s, Flynn was known for his roles as a swashbuckler in films such as Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Adventures of Don Juan. Off-screen, he spent a lot of time in Jamaica and had a reputation for entertaining young female natives. Cezair-Thompson’s novel offers a fictitious account of his sexual escapades, including one that ends with a baby. Or does it? After Flynn finds out one of his flings had a daughter, he flees to the States. The mother, Ida, ditches daughter May and heads to New York. She forgets Flynn (and May) when she meets a new love: a rich baron. Meanwhile, back home, May is not exactly missing Mommy, thanks to her new interests in drugs and free love.
