Sasha Milby

Redbud Gallery presents “Not Altered”

Sasha Milby isn’t afraid of telling a tragic story. With her art, paintings on customized wooden boxes, she reveals intensely personal emotions and stories. Milby uses textures and stains underneath the acrylic paints that often evoke dark, almost disturbing images. There’s a black figure, a dark red heart on his chest, with flowers at the end of several antenna that sprout from his head. While there is nothing menacing about the image (daisies aren’t all that threatening, after all), there is definitely a feeling of gloom. In another work a figure stands, his pink and red face contrasting with his orange clothes. Again, although the colors are bright and cheerful, this is not a happy painting. Noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Through August 31. 303 East 11th Street. For information, call 713-862-2532 or visit www.redbudgallery.com. Free.
Saturdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Aug. 9. Continues through Aug. 31, 2008
