FrenetiCore Fringe Festival

A heaping sampler of local theater, dance, film and music

Houston is adding more fringe. After the success of BooTown’s Fringe Festival, other artistic types are rising out of the underground and onto the stage. The FrenetiCore Fringe Festival starts its three-weekend run of local theater, dance, film and music today.

Blissis a comedic play about the pursuit of the American dream set in a drug-induced Leave It to Beaver land. The avant-garde Lookingasks viewers to examine their own thoughts as solo and paired dancers perform minute, everyday tasks around them. Onslaughtis a sonic experience that starts with a heartbeat and ends with inaudible screaming. Match Cripple, a theatrical drama/comedy, follows a -wheelchair-bound celibate on a quest to end her dry spell. Calumetfeatures dancers revisiting the past 777,600 minutes to the tunes of Michael Andrews, Ani DiFranco and Ugly Casanova. The Penis Chronicles is a Vagina Monologues-like take on the male psyche. There will also be a screening of a series of surreal short films exploring death, failure and redemption, courtesy of Rob Smith, whom you might have seen at the Aurora Picture Show or the Texas Shorts Festival. And these are just the shows for thisweekend!

The curtain rises at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Through August 30. FrenetiCore Theater, 5102 Navigation. For a complete schedule, call 832-426-4624 or visit www.freneticore.net. $16.
