“Rediscovered Gems: A Concert of Masterpieces from Opera, Broadway, and the Great American Songbook”

Houston Ebony Opera gives us masterworks lite

Audiences never tire of the great music numbers presented in “Rediscovered Gems: A Concert of Masterpieces from Opera, Broadway, and the Great American Songbook” by the Houston Ebony Opera. The selections, performed by HEO soloists and its chorus, represent more than 100 years of musical history, and are largely by African-American composers. Classics like Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” and other numbers from the Harlem Renaissance will be performed alongside show tunes and recent compositions, like works from John Cornelius’s Run Jimmy Run— a 1995 work about a fictional African-American presidential candidate. But it’s all about performance, not politics, today at 5 p.m. Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby. For information, call 713-315-2525 or visit www.houston-ebonymusic.org. $25 to $50.
Sun., Aug. 17, 5 p.m., 2008
