The National Repertory Theatre makes it Houston debut with the black comedy The Shape of Things. Set on a college campus in a small town, The Shape of Things is a modern version of the seduction of Adam by Eve. When grad student Evelyn meets Adam, a geeky undergrad, she sees a boy-toy in the making. She sets about remaking him à la Pygmalion, and Adam happily submits to the makeover (he even tattoos Evelyn’s initials, E.A.T., on his groin). But love quickly becomes exploitation, and the changes in Adam affect his relationship with his friends, Jenny and Phillip. The foursome winds its way through a variety of entanglements, each becoming more sinister than the last, eventually leading to a surprise ending. Fast-moving with quick, witty (if not always happy) dialogue, Shape challenges the ideas of love and manipulation. This is a dark comedy with an emphasis on the dark. 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. Through August 31. Ace Theatre, 17011 Bamwood. For information, call 281-587-1020 or visit www.acetheatre.org. $12.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 24, 2 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 31, 2 p.m. Starts: Aug. 22. Continues through Aug. 30, 2008
