Watch happiness flutter away in Puccini’s most-loved opera

Catch Madama Butterfly performed by Opera in the Heights in the intimate Lambert Hall. One of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous and woeful works, Madama Butterflychronicles the unrequited and naive love 15-year-old geisha Cio-Cio-San, also called Butterfly, has for the American soldier who marries and then heartlessly abandons her in Nagasaki, Japan. Butterfly reveals her happiness and heartache in powerful arias against moving music leading to the opera’s dramatic conclusion. The most-performed opera in North America, and supposedly based on actual events, Butterflylaunches Opera in the Heights’s new season. 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.
