Metropolis

2026 is just around the corner

Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) was one of the first sci-fi movies ever made, and it’s still considered among the best. As part of the KUHF Classic Film Concert series, this screening is a great opportunity to see the silent film as it ought to be seen — on a big screen accompanied by live music. Various Texas composers have contributed original scores for the series. Today’s musical accompaniment is provided by Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski, an Austin writing/performing duo also known as the Golden Hornet Project.

Metropolis, set in the year 2026, tells the story of Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), the son of the city’s ruler. Society is split between the privileged thinkers, who live in huge, gothic skyscrapers, and the workers, who live in dismal conditions below ground. Freder begins a relationship with a beautiful woman from the underworld named Maria (Brigitte Helm), who shows him the horrific conditions caused by dangerous machines the workers use. Freder’s father (Alfred Abel) and his evil henchman cook up a scheme involving a robot version of Maria to stop Freder from becoming allied with the workers. Added to this political backdrop and impressive set design is biblical imagery, as Maria preaches about the coming of “The Mediator,” who will make society right.
