Michael Scott

The author of The Magician reminds us that some legends are true

Here’s the truth: One, Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris in 1330. Two, the greatest alchemist of his time, it was rumored that he discovered the secret of immortality. Three, he reportedly died in 1418. Four, his tomb is empty. Michael Scott’s The Magicianis built on those four facts.

The second in the six-part Alchemystseries, The Magician follows teen brother and sister Josh and Sophie in modern-day Paris, where they’ve gone to escape henchmen sent after them by the evil Dr. Dee. With them are Nicholas Flamel and the warrior Scathach. Nicollo Machiavelli, another bad guy and an immortal, is also hot on their trail. Everyone is after the Book of Abraham, an ancient tome filled with prophecies and powerful spells. Josh and Sophie, “twins with pure gold and silver auras,” are potentially gifted magicians, but untrained. It’s up to them to master their powers and recover the book.

With more than 100 titles to his credit, the Irish-born Scott based all of the main characters for the Alchemystseries on figures from history or mythology, making the story a blur of fantasy, reality and imagination. Joan of Arc, valkyries and the gargoyles of Notre Dame all make appearances in The Magician, adding to the werewolves, vampires and golems that were in The Alchemyst.
