“Radar Eyes”

The ArtCar Museum reopens with an exhibition of silk-screened experimental prints

The ArtCar Museum has been closed the last couple of weeks for renovations, but it opens this month with “Radar Eyes,” an exhibition of 200-plus silk-screened prints by experimental artists that, according to press info, “depict distortions of perception, altered states of awareness and geometric, sometimes hallucinogenic subject matter.” We think that means they were high as hell when they were drawing, but hey, we could be wrong.

One of the co-curators for the show, Lumpenmagazine publisher Ed Mar-szew-ski, also known as Edmar, didn’t comment on our high-as-hell notion, but he did tell us, “People are just doing some fantastic work silk-screening right now, really interesting and innovative work. We noticed a rediscovery of this old-school psychedelic work, and saw that people all over the world are experimenting with this type of hallucinogenic subject matter, surrealist stuff.

“There’s a huge subculture of people collecting posters; they call them ‘gig posters.’ But we weren’t interested in that rock poster style so much as we were interested in people making art prints, making contemporary art pieces. We put together a lot of hot-shot art-star artists mixed together with people you’ve never heard of before. Hopefully, people will come away from the show with an appreciation of the depth and the scope of contemporary printmaking; they’ll realize these pieces are works of art in their own right and not dismiss them as just rock posters.” 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Through November 9. 140 Heights Boulevard. For information, call 713-861-5526 or visit www.artcarmuseum.com. Free.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: Sept. 12. Continues through Nov. 9, 2008
