Siamese twins, freaks, dwarfs, sword-swallowers, gangsters, giants and a sadistic killer all play a role in Darryl Wimberley's Kaleidoscope. The author of A Rock and a Hard Place and an Austinite, Wimberley reads from his newest crime novel, which gives readers the down-and-out card hack and drunk Jack Romaine, today. In debt to all the wrong people, Romaine finds himself at the mercy of a Cincinnati thug who sends him off after some stolen money. The search leads Romaine to the southern town of Kaleidoscope, an off-season home to carnival freaks. Trying to fit in with the locals while secretly looking for the stolen money isn't easy for Romaine, but then again, nothing ever is. He reads today at 1 p.m. Blue Willow Bookshop, 14532 Memorial Drive. For information, call 281-497-8675 or visit www.bluewillowbookshop.com. Free. Wimberley also reads today at 4:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-524-8597 or visit www.murderbooks.com. Free.
