Patti LaBelle

She has a once-in-a-generation voice and she's coming to Houston - again

The last time she came to Houston, Patti LaBelle played to a pitiful crowd that didn't even fill up half of the Arena Theatre. But the small crowd didn't deter her: "20 or 20,000, I give the same show," she told the fans and launched into her act, going from her 1990s pop hits ("If You Asked Me To") to sentimental favorites ("Over the Rainbow") and ending up with a gaggle of starstruck fans onstage trying to sing the chorus to "Lady Marmalade" (bless their little off-key hearts). The Grammy Award winner (for Best R&B Vocal and Best Traditional R&B Vocal) is part classic R&B, part gospel and part super-powered funk, with a once-in-a-generation voice. No one sings like Miss Patti does. Maybe Houston will be smart enough to show up to her show this time. 8 p.m. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-227-4772 or visit www.spahouston.org. $22 to $82.
Thu., Oct. 2, 8 p.m., 2008
