As the presidential campaign reaches its zenith, those who'd like to trade bland stump speeches for some political thrills should check out Alan Pakula's 1974 film The Parallax View, screening today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Part of Pakula's political-thriller trilogy, which also includes All the President's Men, the film details what happens when a journalist named Joe Frady (played by Warren Beatty, at the peak of his shaggy-haired hunkiness) investigates the shooting death of a senator. The assassination is passed off as the work of a lone gunman, but when a number of witnesses turn up dead, Frady's digging leads him to the creepy, mysterious Parallax Corporation, which seems to hire sociopaths to perform dastardly deeds - like, say, assassinations.
