More About

Alongside iFest and the Houston Press's own Music Awards Showcase, Free Press Houston's semiannual Westheimer Block Party is easily one of Houston's signature musical happenings — not least because it's absolutely free. April's installment drew more than 5,000 people to the swath of Westheimer between Numbers and Avant Garden, and if our recent weather is any indication, Saturday's street scene should be similarly stuffed. Musically, Block Party rounds up the usual assortment of scene stalwarts (Spain Colored Orange, The Hates, Sideshow Tramps), brash up-and-comers (the McKenzies, News on the March, Come See My Dead Person) and new-to-me names (the Ultra Siberian Pant Factory, Wolves at the Door and Delicious Milk). Others among the 104 performers (at press time) include Austin Smiths devotees Voxtrot — headlining the $12 Block Party upstairs/downstairs afterparty at Numbers with Bring Back the Guns, Satin Hooks, Jonbenét, B L A C K I E, Something Fierce, Lisa's Sons and Antenna Inn — Ton Tons, Rebel Crew, Rusted Shut, Cop Warmth, Riff Tiffs, Something Fierce, Guitars, SkyBlue72, Studemont Project, KAM, Tha Fucking Transmissions, World's Most Dangerous and Dead Roses. Don't forget the host of Houston artists and artisans with their wares on display (and for sale), and that Block Party is the best place to see shirtless dudes walking around with cardboard boxes on their heads for no reason whatsoever.
