I've learned a few things this year. I've learned that acid reflux is a force to be reckoned with. I've learned that it might be time to retire some of my Caddyshack lines. I've learned that the subprime mortgage meltdown really has affected all aspects of the economy (WTF, DJIA?). I've learned that I'll never have rock-hard abs, retire early or open for the Stones at Shea Stadium (and not because they're tearing it down). I've also learned that writer's block is a real phenomenon. I've been all over the city this week, looking for something to fill up this space. I went to a fancy restaurant and tried not one but four trendy herbal-infused cocktails; I tried a few disgusting shots at dive bars; I even skimmed a Bartender's Bible for at least 45 seconds. All that hard work and sacrifice, and still nothing had inspired me. So I went to an old favorite, The Harp (1625 Richmond, 713-528-7827), hoping that getting into a comfort zone would help me. Paul the bartender recommended a Liquid Cocaine shot. Seeing how the real thing has been known to cure writer's block in many a rock star (maybe even the Stones), I gave it a try. After one, I may be hooked.
