Sure to be a highlight of the season, the Lawndale Art Center's 21st Annual "Día de los Muertos" is a celebration of Mexican cultural traditions of Day of the Dead - as seen through the eyes of Texas artists. The centerpiece is an exhibit of retablos, or tin devotional paintings. Bringing a decidedly Lone Star State sensibility to the retablos, the 250-plus invited artists create works that range from traditional to abstract, reverent to blasphemous. But today's gala is more than just an exhibit; it's also a silent auction with each of the retablos up for sale.
Related "Día de los Muertos" events at Lawndale include a musical ofrenda with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and Musiqa (October 28), a sugar skull workshop (October 30) and a Family Day Fiesta (November 1). The gala starts today at 7 p.m. Regular viewing hours for the retablo exhibition are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through November 8. 4912 Main.
