Gulf Coast Reading Series: Samuel Amadon, Lauren Berry and Dane Wisher

Poet Samuel Amadon tunes into the brains behind the boob tube

Gulf Coast Reading Series poet Samuel Amadon is well versed in television. (Get it: versed, poet? Never mind.) His piece “Spy Poem” combines his passions for both prime time and the written word. “[I’m] trying to somehow put together my love of terrible TV drama shows and poetry,” he says and laughs, “you know, like The Unit and Without a Trace.” “Spy Poem” features a character named Cool Breeze, which comes from The Unit. “David Mamet is going to have to forgive me,” says Amadon.

Amadon says these programs are valid references. “There is a language in there that I think is really interesting. There is a way in shows like that where they’ll refer to someone on the run being ‘in the wind’…and I think there is no reason why that can’t be in poetry.”

Today’s reading, the last for 2008, also includes Amadon’s fellow University of Houston Creative Writing classmates, poet Lauren Berry and fiction writer Dane Wisher. 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-523-0701 or visit www.brazosbookstore.com. Free.
