Michael A. Salter: “too much”

The Styrobots are coming! The Styrobots are coming!

Artist Michael Salter uses thousands of pieces of Styrofoam to make Styrobots, his huge, machinery-laden robot creatures that look straight out of Star Wars. "too much" Salter's solo installation at Rice Gallery, features the latest in a series of Styrobots. Each creation is unique, using mixed-and-matched foam bits to make a monster that’s both playful and powerful — a balance Salter strives for in all his installations and paintings. The artist, who teaches digital art at the University of Oregon, will speak at today’s opening reception, which begins at 5 p.m., and he’ll give a gallery talk at noon tomorrow. Regular viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through December 14. 6100 Main. For information, call 713-348-6069 or visit www.ricegallery.org. Free.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 6. Continues through Dec. 14, 2008
