The Nines

Enjoy August in November — John August, that is

John August is famous for his quirky and lovingly oddball scripts, including The Corpse Brideand Big Fish. In 2007 he made his directorial debut with The Nines, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival that year. The strange story starts off with a troubled actor named Gary (played by Ryan Reynolds) who’s living under house arrest. He has the single mom next door as well as his P.R. handler for company — oh, and the number nine, which he repeatedly sees in hallucinations. All this morphs into a different reality in part two, featuring a television writer (again played by Reynolds) trying to get his pilot made (the script was pitched as Rosemary’s Toddler). In part three, yet another reality takes over with a famous video game designer (yep, Reynolds once more) and a sinister hitchhiker at the center. This sort of deliciously amorphous world could only come from an imagination as rich as August’s. You can see The Nines for absolutely zero dollars today at 8:30 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
