Two Faces of Donizetti

Get both sides of the Italian composer today when Lucia di Lammermoor and Don Pasquale are performed back-to-back

Gaetano Donizetti lovers are in for a treat when Opera in the Heights presents two very different scores from the great Italian composer with Two Faces of Donizetti. Opening the evening is the first act of the tragedy Lucia di Lammermoor, performed in concert style. Based on a Sir Walter Scott novel, this bel canto is about feuding families and a woman in difficult love. The second half of the evening features Don Pasqualein its entirety. The comic opera tells the story of Don Pasquale, an old, meddling man who, before the night is over, learns not to get between two young people in love.

In less than 30 years as a composer, Donizetti created more than 70 operas. The New York Times compared his work to that of the Gershwin brothers — both turned out reams of popular music for an increasingly hungry audience. See two of Donizetti’s most popular pieces back to back at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Through November 22. 1703 Heights Boulevard. For information, call 713-861-5303 or visit www.operaintheheights.org. $35 to $45.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Nov. 6. Continues through Nov. 22, 2008
