Modern dance is a medium known for taking itself a bit too seriously at times. But you can’t accuse the folks at Houston Metropolitan Dance of that, as they take time each year to present a collection of Quirky Works, short pieces by up-and-coming and established choreographers that celebrate the diversity of dance. This year’s sixth installment features Priscilla Nathan-Murphy’s Relentless, a new work about overstimulation; Caleb Mitchell’s Stirring Simple Gifts in Shades of Blue, inspired by water; Brock Clawson’s three-part Yawning; and a reprise of Kiki Lucas’s Imbalanced, featuring six female dancers. As usual, the company will welcome a guest troupe, this time Michigan’s Eisenhower Dance Ensemble, which will pre-sent three works, including Tom’s Songs, choreographed by artistic director Laurie Eisenhower and set to a folk-rock mix of tunes. 8 p.m. Wortham Center, 500 Texas. For information, call 713-522-6375 or visit www.houstonmetdance.com. $10 to $35.
Fri., Nov. 14, 8 p.m., 2008
