Election season continues here at the Houston Press, where we've just finished counting the votes from the first round of the second year of our high school photo contest. The theme this time around was Faces, and we got mugs from students all over the Houston area.

First place goes to Drew Koch of the Kinkaid School for his stunning black-and-white photograph of three boys and their father sitting on a curb and taking in the sights and sounds of a festival. Not only was the composition dead on, but it also hints at the action outside of the frame. Drew also got most of the votes from our online readers and won the Readers' Choice award.

Mary Brossman takes home second place for her capture of two girls, fully clothed, underwater. This High School for the Performing and Visual Arts student presented a unique interpretation on the theme.

Third place goes to Cypress Creek's Whitney Pavlas for her photo of a little girl standing in a field of bluebonnets. Whitney was a perennial contender in last year's contest, and we're glad to see she's back for another year.

All winners receive bookstore gift certificates and have their photos entered in our yearlong contest for college scholarships. The theme for the next round is Recovery, whether from Hurricane Ike, from an accident, from an addiction, from a fumble — you name it. Click here for more information.
