Inside Africa: Three Hidden Wars

Journalist and former detainee Paul Salopek talks about the wars in Africa

Conflict, genocide, epidemics and human rights abuses: In Africa, these horrors are daily, even if the rest of the world decides to largely ignore them. One person crusading tirelessly for awareness is journalist Paul Salopek, who’s simultaneously covered not one but three African wars: those in Sudan, Congo and Somalia. Today, he’ll talk about the conflicts in a lecture titled Inside Africa: Three Hidden Wars, part of the Human Rights series of talks at Rothko Chapel.

Salopek became known around the world when he was kidnapped and held in Darfur, but that’s not his only claim to fame. He has also won two Pulitzer Prizes as a correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, including the 2001 prize for International Reporting, which recognized his work in Africa. Elias Bongmba, a professor of religious studies at Rice University, will lead a question-and-answer session after Salopek’s talk. 7 p.m. 1409 Sul Ross.
