“Developing Houston: Photographic Treasures from the Cecil Thomson Collection”

Web exclusive!

See what Houston looked like in the early part of last century at the “Developing Houston: Photographic Treasures from the Cecil Thomson Collection.” Thomson was one of Houston’s first professional photographers, and his street scenes from the late 1920s to the mid 1950s capture the bustling city as it grew to national prominence. The San Jacinto Monument and Museum exhibit features historic photos displayed alongside contemporary shots of the same locations, showing the city’s incredible growth, and Art Deco jewelry paired with the skyscrapers they inspired.

Visitors to “Developing Houston” will also enjoy the Museum’s other exhibits chronicling the lives of Texas heroes Stephen F. Austin and Lorenzo De Zavala, and the history of the Texas Navy. Combo tickets allow visitors access to the 567-foot monument tower, the marsh boardwalk, the Battleship TEXAS and the historic battleground where the fate of the Lone Star State was decided. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. One Monument Circle, La Porte. For information, call 281-479-2421 or visit www.sanjacinto-museum.org. $3 to $5 for “Developing Houston” exhibit; multi-attraction combo tickets are $8 to $12.
May 24, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., 2008
