Let’s face it, people: Buying gifts based on Christmas wish lists is like doing your friends’ and family’s shopping for them. This year, give a gift that proves you actually know someone, instead of the gift that proves you can read mass e-mails you were BC’d on. Spacetaker’s Winter Holiday Art Market is a good place to start. Local artisans sell their wares — everything from jewelry to paintings to clothing — just in time for the holiday season. Sure, mom would appreciate that perfume and lotion gift set from the mall, but what about a basket of handmade soaps or a one-of-a-kind necklace with matching earrings? Not only will you likely be the envy of all the other gift-givers, but you’ll also do it without having to battle the holiday shopping nightmare at the mall. WHAM kicks off today with a pre--shopping party including DJs, food and beverages from 6 to 10 p.m. The market continues noon to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street. For information, call 713-862-0082 or visit www.winter-holiday-artmarket.com. Free.
