The Ice at Discovery Green

Houston gets a frozen pond just in time for Christmas

Here in Houston, it’s hard to have the kind of Christmas spirit that involves walking in a winter wonderland or letting it snow, snow, snow because — well — it’s too damn hot here. However, you can break out your best A Charlie Brown Christmas ice--skating moves for The Ice at Discovery Green. The Green’s lake will be frozen over for blade runners of all ages. And in keeping with the park’s commitment to, um, greenness, the entire 7,200-square-foot skating surface will be frozen and kept solid by 100 percent renewable energy, with even the ice rink border made of recycled plastic material. Oh, and there’s a smaller rink just for the kiddies. Check with the staff about private and group skating lessons. Regular rink times are 4 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays. Hours vary for December 24, 25 and 31, and January 1. Through January 19. 1500 McKinney. For information, call 713-434-RINK or visit www.theiceatdiscoverygreen.com. $10 (includes new skates rental).
Mondays-Thursdays, 4-9 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 10 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sundays, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Starts: Nov. 27. Continues through Jan. 19, 2008
