Tommy Drake

The Woodlands-based comedian has some “kids, do try this at home” advice for wanna-be knife jugglers

There are lots of comedians who incorporate juggling into their jokes, but only Tommy Drake shares this bit of advice for young tossers: “Kids, do try this at home. That’s where I learned how to do it. There’s knives right there in the kitchen.” The former Californian is now a resident of The Woodlands, his wife’s hometown. Marriage is frequent fodder for his act, and Drake’s nothing if not a realist. “We’ve been married for eight years,” he explains. “Our favorite thing to do when we first got married was to get drunk and make love. Now, we have to choose one or the other.” And though he didn’t make it past the first round of the “Houston’s Funniest Person” contest some years back, Drake has managed to hone his act enough over the years to get a call to open for Cher. Not bad for a guy who used to have a job at AstroWorld as the Riddler in the “Batman Forever Water Stunt Spectacular.” (No word on whether Cher and Drake traded tips on how to put on tights.) 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, 7, 9 and 10:45 p.m. Saturday. The Laff Stop, 526 Waugh Drive. For information, call 713-524-2333 or visit www.laffstop.com. $20.
