“Whimsical Wearables”

Standouts from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection make us rethink the definition of jewelry

Is it jewelry? Or is it art? “Whimsical Wearables: Jewelry for Our Time” doesn’t answer those questions as much as it rephrases them. The exhibit, made up of items from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection, shows more than a dozen pieces of jewelry made from nontraditional materials. Included is a brooch made from pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, a rigid necklace made of pleated plastic and steel, and a necklace made up of a bunch of square frames, all connected, which the wearer unfolds and arranges…uh…she sticks her head though and hangs the frames…oh, hell — you have to go see it. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Houston Public Library, Central Branch, 500 McKinney. For information, call 832-393-1313 or visit www.houston-library.org. Free.
