Classic Lit/Metamorphosis

Web exclusive!

Change is hard for anyone, but it’s especially hard for traveling salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes up to find himself transformed into a bug. That’s the premise of the novella Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Gregor isn’t as alarmed as intrigued by the situation. He watches his many legs wiggle in the air while he lies in bed; he crawls around on the walls and ceilings. His family isn’t alarmed either — at least not by his transformation, although they are concerned with the loss of his paycheck. Discuss Gregor’s changing ways at today’s Classic Literature Book Club. Noon. Houston Public Library, 500 McKinney. For information, call 832-393-1313 or visit www.houstonlibrary.org. Free.
