Masturbation, sexual abuse, teenage passion — it’s all in Spring Awakening, one of the most applauded new Broadway musicals to come along in years. The rock score by Duncan Sheik and the lively lyrics and book by Steven Sater are based on the 1891 German play by Frank Wedekind. The play was banned for its “controversial sexuality,” but that was then. The story about a group of teens who explore their sexuality, and the struggles of the stodgy adults who try to control them, is just what Broadway needs to make musicals new again. In 2007, the show won eight Tony Awards, and The New York Times said a “fresh breeze of true inspiration blows steadily through this ambitious” new play. 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sundays.
