Malcolm Gladwell

The author of best-selling books The Tipping Point and Blink reads from his latest, Outliers: The Story of Success

Leave the self-help books and pyramid schemes at the door — Malcolm Gladwell can simply tell you if you’re headed for success. The author/New Yorker staff writer is obsessed with success. He’s penned three books — including the best-selling The Tipping Pointand Blink, exploring why certain people, fashion trends, songs, ideas, etc. fare better than others. Outliers: The Story of Success, his third and latest book, examines people who Gladwell believes operate outside the normal realm of success, people who have risen above the average ranks of achievement — overachievers, or, in his words, “outliers.”

Hard work and dedication don’t sufficiently explain success. With page--turning investigative prose, Gladwell unveils how folks like Bill Gates, The Beatles and Chris Langan, a man with a higher IQ than Einstein, have the right place and the right time to thank for their fortunes. Gladwell says upbringing and surroundings also play a role, but so does date of birth. For example, he gives evidence to suggest that 1935 was the best year to be born in, in order to be rich in the twentieth century. And 22 percent of the richest people of all time were born in 1835. Gladwell reads from and discusses Outlierstoday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hilton Americas, 1600 Lamar. For information, call 713-521-2026 or visit www.inprinthouston.org. $7 to $75.
