Batsheva Dance Company

Israel may be a place best known for its history, but when it comes to dance, the movement coming out of Tel Aviv in the form of the Batsheva Dance Company is like something from the future. The company, co-founded by Martha Graham and the Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild in 1964, sprang to new artistic heights in 1990 with the appointment of choreographer Ohad Naharin as artistic director. Naharin infused the company with what he calls “Gaga,” an energetic, free, dancer-centered style that is both technically precise and creatively spontaneous. Today, the Society for the Performing Arts brings the company to Houston to perform Deca Dance, a sort of greatest-hits collage of Naharin’s works.
