Gloria Gaynor with the Houston Symphony Orchestra

After 30 years, she’s still surviving

Who knew one song would take Gloria Gaynor from Newark to the Houston Symphony stage? Yes, she’s had other hits (“Never Can Say Good-Bye” and “I Am Who I Am”), but it’s “I Will Survive” that people most remember. And it’s a sure thing that Gaynor’s signature song will be the highlight of A Disco Evening with Gloria Gaynor, her first performance ever with a symphony orchestra. How are her disco hits going to sound with 90 classical musicians backing her? “I have no idea!” she says. “I am so looking forward to this. No one is more excited than I am.” After years of working with small bands, Gaynor will have to make some adjustments to work with an orchestra and conductor. Then again, maybe not. “The wonderful thing about being the lead singer,” she laughs, “is that they have to cooperate with me.” 7:30 p.m. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-224-7575 or visit www.houstonsymphony.org. $25 to $150.
