If you’ve always wanted to make the leap from “appreciator” to “collector,” the Houston Center for Photography’s 2009 Print Auction Exhibition is a good place to start. The world’s top artists, galleries and collectors have contributed photographic art for the February 12 event, whose entire proceeds go to producing exhibitions, educational initiatives and outreach programs. To prep for the auction, swing by the HCP and check out the dozens of shots to choose from, including one of O. Rufus Lovett’s black-and-white candid shots of a Kilgore Rangerettes dance squad member and Arthur Meyerson’s stunning shot of a white stallion running in Mexico. You might need a few visits to make up your mind, but you can get a head start at the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 23. Regular viewing hours for the exhibit are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Through February 10. 1441 West Alabama. For information, call 713-529-4755 or visit www.hcponline.org. Free.
