The art/food/fashion mega-event might be the new kid in town, but it’s making one hell of a debut

You can expect one hell of a debut for the first ever Houston Press Artopia, where fashion, music, art and food collide. “This is an upscale event featuring all types of artists,” Houston Press Marketing Coordinator Allisen Picos tells us. “There’s going to be lots to look at; we’re having three fashion shows, three bands, lots of different performing groups and more than 50 artists. Houston has a really great artist community, but there isn’t always an outlet for artists to express themselves. This is another outlet.”
Among the creative types being featured at Artopia are Cake, Envy Me and Zucchero, each providing the latest in fashionable wearables. HP Music Awards winner Karina Nistal is taking care of the music with some help by Arthur Yoria and the Sideshow Tramps. Fifty Houston artists — some scratch beginners and others award-winning big shots — are showing their works, which vary from street art to psychedelic and pop. Representing the performing arts, Travesty Dance Group and Dominic Walsh Dance Theater will each present works from their arsenals. And handling the food are El Patio, Coffee Contigo and the Ra Sushi Bar, among -others.
“We want to show that Houston is a really talented city,” says Picos. “So we’re bringing in all kinds of art — it’s all going to be there.”
The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the MasterMind Awards. Given to innovative artists who are pushing the envelope in the visual and performing arts, as well as fashion and design, each award includes a $2,000 grant.
