Mehmet Murat Somer

The U.S. finally gets to meet the camp characters in the Hop-Çiki-Yaya series

A kickboxing drag queen who dresses like Audrey Hepburn is an unexpected heroine for a best-selling Turkish mystery series, but author Mehmet Murat Somer didn’t let that stop him from creating the outlandish comedic character, star of the Hop-Çiki-Yaya whodunit series. With lip gloss and gossipy friends in tow, the unnamed heroine solves murders in her spare time. Not that she has much, since she manages an Istanbul nightclub after dark, then dons menswear for her day job as a male computer technician. Somer is a best-selling author in the United Kingdom, but he and his wonderfully camp characters haven’t been seen in the U.S. until now. Today’s reading/discussion is followed by a signing session. 6:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-524-8597 or visit www.murderbooks.com. Free.
