Toni Valle challenges your nostalgia for the ‘80s

It seems as though everything ‘80s is trendy again, given the new 90210and the resurgence of Mickey Rourke. But in her new evening-length dance performance, tetris, choreographer Toni Valle and a dozen other modern dancers take a more insightful look at the decade. Based on the concept that there are many selves in each of us who work to sustain the individual, tetrisintroduces us to Alex and her selves, who, dancing to music from the likes of the Cure and the Smiths, explore the sociological and political environment of the 1980s. In “Shuttle,” Alex and her selves respond to the Challenger’s explosion; in “How Can I Love?” they react to the onset of the AIDS epidemic. Don’t be surprised if you leave with a little less ‘80s nostalgia. 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Through February 7. Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, 2201 Preston. For information, call 713-409-2838 or visit www.tonileagovalle.com. $13 to $40.
Thu., Jan. 29, 8 p.m.; Sat., Jan. 31, 8 p.m.; Feb. 5-7, 8 p.m., 2009
