Musically speaking, the Zydepunks' name is a little misleading. Yes, accordion and gnashing guitars are an essential part of the New Orleans quintet's sound, but its nautically obsessed new album Finisterre (Nine Mile Records) sails a considerable distance from either zydeco or punk rock. Rollicking opener "Papirossen in Gan Eden" recalls the crazed gypsy-wedding music of Gogol Bordello, while "Dear Molly" is a heartfelt Irish Channel ballad à la Flogging Molly and "Cuando Creceran los Flores" kicks up its heels south of the border. Once Zydepunks step onstage, though, the important thing about their songs isn't where they come from but where they take you — straight to the dance floor.
