You won’t have to go any further than your neighborhood library to find family-friendly Black History Month celebrations. There are various music programs planned recalling African-American music from plantation spirituals to the sounds of Motown. A step crew will not only perform, but will also present the history of the fast-stepping, intricate dance form. Storytellers will continue the Griot traditions, some appearing with stilt-walkers. Looking for something more literary? There’s a discussion of Sister Souljah’s novel Midnight: A Gangster Love Story.

You can start celebrating today at the Women of the Blues concert with Tweed Smith performing the music of Nina Simone, Bessie Smith and others. 6:30 p.m. Kendall Neighborhood Library, 14330 Memorial Drive. For information, call 832-393-1880.

Each branch has its own schedule, but several events will have multiple dates. Check for events in your area at www.houstonlibrary.org. All events are free.

Mondays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 5. Continues through Feb. 28, 2009
