2nd Annual History Road Rally

Web exclusive!

If you wanted to see streets lined with bricks that were handmade by freed slaves, where would you go? Do you know that Houston has an island inside the 610 Loop? No? Well, then you understand the need for Houston Arts and Media’s Neighbor to Neighbor Oral History Project. Show your support for HAM by participating in the 2nd Annual History Road Rally. The two-hour rally is a giant scavenger hunt for Houston history fanatics. You get a clue about a local historic site, figure it out, rush over and take a picture of it with a team member in the shot, then rush back to home base — before everyone else, of course. Winners get prizes and everyone gets a party (read: free food). But most importantly, everyone gets that warm feeling inside from knowing you helped a do-good organization. (BTW, to see those bricks, you’d go to Freedmen’s Town in Fourth Ward, the only post-Civil War historic district built by freed slaves left in America. To find that island, you’d go to the corner of Navigation and Harrisburg. What’s that? Navigation and Harrisburg are parallel streets and never intersect? You better brush up on your map reading before you join the rally.) 1 to 3:30 p.m. SPJST Hall, 1435 Beal Road. For information, visit www.houstonartsandmedia.org. $25 to $35.

Sun., March 1, 1-3 p.m., 2009
