A Lesson Before Dying

Web exclusive!

It’s easy to see why Jefferson was convicted of murder in A Lesson Before Dying. His lawyer defended him by calling him “hardly more worthwhile than a hog,” hoping to prove that Jefferson was too stupid to have committed the crime. Friends want to help him, especially as his execution date nears, but Jefferson’s taken the hog label to heart. He says dignity is for “youmans,” not hogs. One man, a schoolteacher named Grant, tries to reach Jefferson, but the prisoner isn’t interested in what the college-educated teacher has to say. What happens next changes both men’s lives. 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Through March 7. Houston Community College, Central campus, 3517 Austin. For information, call 713-718-6570 or visit www.central.hccs.edu. $5 to $8.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Feb. 26. Continues through March 7, 2009
