Stranded: I’ve Come from a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains

Web exclusive!

If you think you know all about extreme survival, think again. Stranded: I’ve Come from a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains, the 2008 prize-winning French documentary by Gonzalo Arijón, will knock that faux tiki torch right out of your hand. On October 13, 1972, a chartered Uruguayan plane filled with a student rugby team, the “Old Christians,” smashed into the Chilean Andes. Miraculously, 32 out of 45 passengers survived the impact. But then hell began. Nighttime temperatures hovered at 20 degrees below, whatever scant food had been scavenged in the suitcases quickly ran out, they went blind from the snow glare, the seriously injured died day by day and the instinct to survive led inevitably to cannibalism. Seventy-two days later, after two of them set off across the mountains on another unthinkable tale of survival to get help, they were saved. Sixteen lived to tell the tale. Relive the intense cold — and heat — with this incredible true movie. 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 7:30 p.m. March 6. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet.
