Roy Hargrove Quintet

Waco native Roy Hargrove is without a doubt one of jazz's leading lights among the under-40 set, at least until he reaches that milestone later this year. But fans of Common, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu — a fellow alum of Dallas's Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts — should also recognize his incisive, melodic trumpetwork, even if they didn't realize that was him. Hargrove can play post-Miles bop straight, no chaser, or weave it around styles ranging from Latin — for which his band Crisol won a 1998 Grammy — to the funk- and soul-steeped grooves of his more recent group RH Factor. Hargrove and his Roy Hargrove Quintet are back on more traditional ground for their latest LP, last year's Earfood, but he's still a stylistic chameleon, veering from dusky Blue Note ballads ("Divine") to sharp-turn swingers ("Strasbourg/St. Denis") to a closing cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me" that churches up his sound with some good old-time hallelujah gospel.
