The Triplets of Belleville

Web exclusive!

The innovative cartoon fable The Triplets of Belleville is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Maybe if you mixed Jacques Tati, Alfred Hitchcock and Tim Burton you’d come close, but no combo could be as entertaining and weird as writer/director Sylvain Chomet’s 2003 trip to the wild side of obsession and family love. This almost-wordless tale is inhabited by a freaky-muscled bicyclist whose overdeveloped calves and thighs get massaged by his doting grandmother with an egg beater, lawn mower and vacuum cleaner. He has a beloved pet bloodhound who dreams with abandon; there are three old singing sisters (the Triplets of Belleville) who have a mighty tasty yen for frogs; and there’s a French waiter who literally bends over backward to please. This bizarre, poetic look at the world of two-wheelers and big hearts is a definite must-see. 7 p.m. Discovery Green, 1500 Mc Kinney.
